Dec 11, 2023 – The Department of Defense (DoD) has made an award decision on the Growing Additive Manufacturing Maturity for Airbreathing Hypersonics (GAMMA-H) prototype opportunity.

“Additive manufacturing has made great strides in the last few years for creating new weapons and components,” stated Keith DeVries, Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Program Deputy Director.

The project was awarded through the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) vehicle, managed by the National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL) office, with funding and support from the OSD ManTech program.

A total of $96.3M has been awarded across 9 performers, who are responding to the call for rapid development of manufacturing technologies and processes for hypersonic sub-subsystems, resulting in more efficient development of hypersonic capabilities.

“Those advancements have been fundamental unto themselves,” DeVries said. “Now, it feels like we’re turning a corner and we’re trying to find what the sweet spot is for how big of a build volume is appropriate for us to apply this technology.”

With numerous registrants for the Project TALX event hosted by NSTXL and overall high levels of interest, the widespread response to this project request indicates the strong potential for collaborative advancement between industry and government when an OTA is utilized. The GAMMA-H project will assist the DoD’s mission to keep the U.S. at the forefront of defense capabilities.
